
The Institute for Social Marketing and the Centre for Tobacco Control Research are two highly successful linked research centres based at the University of Stirling as part of a collaboration with the Open University. The Institute for Social Marketing has been established for over 29 years and conducts social marketing research in two areas: health and social behaviour change, and the impact of commercial marketing on society. The Centre for Tobacco Control Research is funded by Cancer Research UK and conducts important and topical research into the effectiveness of tobacco control policies such as advertising restrictions, regulations on smoking in enclosed spaces, and cessation services.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and able researcher to join our team and work principally on a newly awarded project to establish a programme of dissemination of evidence-based health communications activities and innovations on communicable disease which will support countries in the European region. Experience in qualitative research methods (especially in-depth interviews); assisting in the development and piloting of surveys; literature search and review; and, situation mapping and analysis is required. Excellent writing skills and experience of writing reports for different audiences is essential; as is excellent communication skills as this project requires contact and liaison with a broad range of professionals and colleagues across the European region - expertise in a second European language would also be valuable. Some experience in quantitative data analysis is also desirable and the ability to work flexibly and independently within a project team structure is essential.
Preferably a social sciences, marketing/social marketing or public health background. Training will be provided but preference will be given to candidates with experience of conducting research and developing research projects.

The Research Fellow will be involved in a study at the Cancer Care Research Centre, Department of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Stirling. The Research Fellow will be involved in conducting a study of a service for people with cancer to assist them to remain in, or return to paid employment. The service is based in Dundee and Edinburgh. He/she will be responsible for recruitment, data gathering (survey), data analysis (quantitative) and report writing.
The post is for 19 months full-time. It would suit an individual with experience in health or social care research or a related field who already has a PhD.

Applications are invited from social science graduates for the above position based at the Office of the Registrar General for Scotland and the University of Stirling. The appointment will be for 18 months, starting 1st June 2010.
The successful candidate will form part of the Centre for Population Change team. The CPC is centred at the University of Southampton, with Scottish partners at the Universities of Stirling, St Andrews, Strathclyde and Edinburgh. The CPC brings together experts from across the social sciences to research the key drivers of population change and the implications for economic welfare and social support at the national, local, household and individual level.
The research fellow work on a project that is based at the University of Stirling. It will study social care provision in rural areas of Scotland and England, using both quantitative and qualitative methods. The appointee will report to the Principal Investigators on this project – Professor David Bell, (Division of Economics) and Professor Alison Bowes (Department of Applied Social Science). The appointee will be responsible for:
1)Analysing information relating to care for older people in large-scale administrative and survey data sets
2)Carrying out a quantitative/qualitative survey among older people/carers in a rural part of England and of Scotland
Successful applicants are likely to have a PhD in social sciences and will be skilled in quantitative and qualitative research techniques as well as having effective oral and written communication skills. A clean driving license would be desirable.

This is an exciting opportunity for a research fellow to work with an experienced team of researchers. This post will involve working on a project to develop and test a research based toolkit to support Allied Health Professionals measure the impact of their clinical practice. The post will involve a wide range of tasks including:- conducting literature reviews; undertaking theory driven surveys; validating the CARE measure for use with AHPs; outcome measures facilitating focus groups and semi-structured interviews; developing material for the toolkit; working with clinical teams to pilot material; and testing materials using case study methods in at least two different clinical sites. The post-holder is expected to take on significant responsibilities for the completion of the project and work with minimal supervision on agreed elements. The post is based at the University of Stirling and will require travel throughout Scotland.

The Stirling Centre for Economic Methodology (SCEME), situated in the Management School of the University of Stirling, has recently been awarded a one-year project by the Nuffield Foundation to pilot the use of digital audio records for economic research.
You will support the project on a part-time basis 25% FTE, with the possibility of additional hours in the second six months of the post. Working alongside Professor Sheila Dow and other colleagues within SCEME on the project your work will involve searching for, evaluating and collecting relevant audio and video items; creation of meta-data for these items; and help with the process of rights clearance for the use of the items.
You will have a good honours degree which includes, as a main subject, economics, and/or economic history or other cognate social sciences. In addition experience in the uses of web-based approaches to learning or a background in librarianship would be useful.
A start date of early May 2010 is envisaged.
